This year, I spent more time with agents than with people.

And the strange part is: I loved a lot of it. The speed, the weirdness, the leverage, the feeling that a thought can become a working artifact in minutes.

But this also became a real place I lived in: terminal agents, coding agents, model chats, harnesses, profile systems, partial answers, false done signals, and decisions that still had to be mine. My ADHD brain does not automatically survive that new agentic reality. HAI is the interface I started building so I do not disappear inside the systems I love using.

Not just a feeling

The failure is visible when you draw the loop.

The emotional weight comes from an operational shape: many systems can act, but the final responsibility still lands in one human nervous system.

The pattern

The problem starts where the work starts feeling alive.

Strong agents do not just answer. They pull. They offer momentum, companionship with the work, fast feedback, strange ideas, and the sense that the machine is thinking beside you. Then they multiply: more threads, more outputs, more promises, more things only I can decide.

Agents made the work feel close.

They made thinking visible. A vague feeling could become a prototype, a page, a diagram, a test run, or a better question before the energy was gone.

02 / the cost

The work started occupying my head.

When agents run in parallel, every output asks for a place in memory. Plans, critiques, artifacts, warnings, and next steps arrive faster than ownership can settle.

03 / the need

I needed a way back to one decision.

HAI is that way back: a boundary between the agentic flood and the human who still has to say yes, no, stop, park, or do this next.

What HAI protects

The human must not become the hidden runtime.

Without an interface, the human becomes the scheduler, memory layer, verifier, risk owner, product manager, and emergency brake. That is not collaboration. That is invisible operations work.

HAI is my attempt to make that work explicit: capture the messy human state, classify the task, bound what an agent may do, require evidence, and return the next decision in a form the human can still hold.

For me, this is not theoretical. It is the difference between loving agent work and being consumed by it.

Operational meaning

This has to become behavior, not branding.

Keep the joy

HAI should preserve the play and leverage of agent work, not slow it into bureaucracy.

Reduce the flood

Raw agent output is not automatically useful. It has to be filtered into owner packets and next actions.

Leave ownership human

Scope, risk, irreversible choices, and acceptance stay with the human instead of disappearing into automation.

Make stop possible

A good HAI does not only start agents. It makes parking, rejecting, freezing, and verifying normal.

Start small

Bring one workflow where agent work stopped feeling ownable.
